Antique Black Wood Bead Priest's Belt Rosary, Circa 1890s
$165.00 USD
Long belt rosary of turned black wooden beads joined by hand-looped brass wire links, made to be worn rather than carried in a pocket.
Belt or habit rosaries were part of the dress of many priests, friars and religious orders. Longer and sturdier than an ordinary rosary, often with the full fifteen decades, they hung from the cincture or belt at the waist, ready to be prayed through the day and, in many orders, a visible sign of the wearer's vows. Black wood beads were favored for their durability and simplicity. A rosary like this would have been worn for years, often for a lifetime of ministry.
Shows wear consistent with long use.
