19th Century LUG Apothecary Jar Pontil Bottom - Syr. Rhei This early blown glass apothecary bottle features a pontil mark on the bottom, a glass stopper, and a hand painted LUG (label under glass) This item is in antique condition and may feature cracks, chips, and or scratches to the bottle or label SYR:RHEI (right) is syrup made with the roots of the familiar garden plant rhubarb, Rheum rabarbarum. It was known for centuries, beginning in Asia, that the powdered roots could be used as a laxative; they are rich in substances known as anthraquinones, such as emodin and rhein, which have cathartic and laxative properties.
