Victorian Double Church Kneeler (Prie-Dieu) in Ruby Velvet with Bakelite and Brass Ends, Circa 1880s-1910s
$500.00 USD
Victorian double church kneeler (prie-dieu) with a ruby striped velvet cushioned kneeling pad and matching upholstered elbow rest, trimmed with bullion fringe. The ends are framed by amber Bakelite columns with ornate brass finials, mounts and cast feet. The prie-dieu, French for "pray to God," provided a cushioned place to kneel and a rest for the arms or a prayer book in churches, chapels and devout Victorian homes. Shows wear to the velvet and patina to the brass consistent with age.
