The tonsil guillotine was a surgical instrument used from the 19th to early 20th century for removing tonsils quickly and efficiently.
Designed with a sharp blade that slid through a ring-shaped opening (see picture 3), it allowed doctors to sever the tonsil in a single swift motion. Though considered an innovation at the time for speeding up tonsillectomies, the procedure was often performed with minimal anesthesia and carried significant risks of bleeding and infection.
Today, the tonsil guillotine stands as a reminder of crude early surgical practices and the evolution of medical precision and patient care.
