Sterling Silver Engraved Locket with Saint Christopher Figure on Purple Velvet, Circa 1920s-1950s
Hinged rectangular sterling silver locket with an engraved front, opening to a small cast figure of Saint Christopher set on purple velvet, a miniature pocket shrine to be carried on a journey.
Saint Christopher, whose name means "Christ-bearer," is one of the most beloved saints of travelers. According to legend he was a giant who served by carrying people across a dangerous river on his shoulders. One night he carried a small child who grew heavier with every step until Christopher could barely reach the far bank; the child revealed himself as Christ, bearing the weight of the whole world. From the Middle Ages onward it was believed that whoever looked upon his image would be kept safe from harm that day, and his likeness was carried by pilgrims, sailors and, in the 20th century, motorists and soldiers. Although his feast was removed from the universal Church calendar in 1969, devotion to him as the patron of travelers has never faded.
Shows wear consistent with age.
